The word cancer can be frightening. Part of that fear comes from the feeling that the disease is completely outside our control. And, to some extent, it is. No lifestyle can guarantee that someone will never develop cancer. Age, genetics, environmental exposures, and other biological factors all influence cancer risk.[68] But that does not mean prevention is powerless. Some cancer risk factors can be changed. Avoiding tobacco, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol, protecting yourself from certain infections, and reducing excessive ultraviolet exposure are all evidence-based ways to lower cancer risk.[17]

What Does “Cancer Risk” Actually Mean?

When scientists say that something “increases cancer risk,” they are talking about probability — not certainty.[8] For example, smoking is an established cause of cancer. This does not mean that every person who smokes will develop the disease. It means that people who smoke have a higher probability of developing certain cancers compared with people who are not exposed in the same way.[2,3,8] Cancer risk is rarely determined by one factor alone. It is shaped by a combination of genetics, lifestyle, environmental exposures, and other biological influences.[68] This distinction matters. Cancer prevention is about reducing risk where possible, not creating the illusion that every cancer can be prevented.

1. If You Smoke, Quitting Matters

Tobacco use is one of the most important preventable causes of cancer.[1,2,5,7]

Cigarette smoke exposes the body to numerous chemicals capable of damaging cells and DNA, and tobacco smoke contains substances that are classified as carcinogenic to humans.[2,3]

Smoking is linked to cancers in several parts of the body, including the:

● lungs

● mouth and throat

● larynx

● esophagus

● pancreas

● bladder

● kidney [2,3]

The effects of smoking build over time, but quitting still matters — even after years of tobacco use. Cancer risk decreases after smoking cessation, and the health benefits continue to grow over time.[1,2]

Quitting can be difficult, and it does not have to be done through willpower alone. Professional support and evidence-based smoking-cessation approaches can help.[5]

2. Maintain a Healthy Weight — and Stay Active

Excess body weight is associated with an increased risk of several cancers, including postmenopausal breast, colorectal, endometrial, esophageal, kidney, and pancreatic cancers.[4,6]

The relationship is more complicated than simply “more body fat equals more cancer.”

Adipose tissue is biologically active. Excess body fat can influence inflammation, insulin signalling, hormone levels and other pathways involved in cell growth and metabolism.[2,4]

This does not mean that body weight alone determines whether someone will develop cancer. Cancer has multiple causes, and weight should never be used to blame someone for a diagnosis.

From a prevention perspective, the goal is to support a healthy weight over time through sustainable eating patterns and regular physical activity.[1,4,6]

Physical activity itself has also been associated with a lower risk of certain cancers.[4,6]

3. Limit Alcohol

Alcohol is a recognised carcinogenic exposure and has been linked to several cancers.[24,7]

These include cancers of the:

● mouth

● pharynx

● larynx

● esophagus

● liver

● colon and rectum

● breast [24]

One reason involves acetaldehyde, a toxic compound produced when the body breaks down ethanol. Acetaldehyde can damage DNA and interfere with normal cellular processes. Alcohol consumption can also contribute to oxidative stress and influence hormone regulation, providing several possible pathways through which it may contribute to cancer development.[2,4]

The relationship is important because alcohol is sometimes discussed mainly in the context of liver health. Its association with cancer extends well beyond the liver.

Reducing alcohol intake therefore reduces exposure to a known cancer risk factor.[14,7]

4. Protect Yourself From Cancer-Causing Infections

Not all cancers begin with a lifestyle exposure. Some are linked to infections.[3,7]

Several viruses, bacteria, and parasites are classified as carcinogenic to humans.[3]

Among the most important are:

Human Papillomavirus — HPV

Persistent infection with high-risk types of HPV can lead to cervical cancer and is also linked to several other cancers.[3,7]

Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C

Chronic hepatitis B and C infections can damage the liver over many years and increase the risk of liver cancer.[3,7]

Helicobacter pylori

H. pylori is a bacterium that can cause long-term inflammation in the stomach and is an established cause of gastric cancer.[3,4]

The important part is that some infection-related cancers can be prevented.

Vaccination against HPV and hepatitis B can prevent infections that may later lead to cancer.[5,7] Depending on the infection and the individual, appropriate testing and treatment can also play a role in reducing long-term risk.[6,7]

5. Protect Your Skin From Excessive UV Radiation

Ultraviolet radiation from the sun is a known cause of skin cancer.[3,7]

UV radiation can damage DNA in skin cells. Over time, repeated or intense exposure can increase the likelihood that harmful cellular changes will accumulate.[24]

Protecting your skin does not mean avoiding the outdoors altogether.

Practical ways to reduce excessive UV exposure include:

● seeking shade when sunlight is intense

● wearing protective clothing

● using appropriate broad-spectrum sunscreen

● reapplying sunscreen when needed

● avoiding unnecessary intense sun exposure[1,4]

Sun protection is particularly important for people with characteristics associated with a higher risk of skin cancer, but UV protection is relevant to everyone.

Are These the Only Ways to Reduce Cancer Risk?

No.

Cancer prevention is much broader than these five steps.

Diet, physical activity, occupational and environmental exposures, air pollution, and other factors can also influence risk.[4,6,7]

Screening also plays an important role in cancer control. Screening tests can identify some cancers at an earlier stage, when treatment may be more effective. Some screening programmes can also identify precancerous changes before they develop into invasive cancer.[5,6]

However, screening and prevention are not the same thing, and the appropriate screening tests depend on factors such as age, sex, medical history and individual risk.

The Bottom Line

There is no way to make yourself “cancer-proof.”

Someone can follow every health recommendation and still develop cancer. Likewise, a cancer diagnosis should never automatically be interpreted as the result of poor lifestyle choices.

Βut reducing avoidable exposures still matters.

Avoiding tobacco, maintaining a healthy weight, staying physically active, limiting alcohol, preventing cancer-causing infections, and protecting your skin from excessive UV radiation can all contribute to lowering cancer risk.[17]

Cancer prevention is not about fear or perfection.

It is about understanding which risks we can influence — and making informed choices where possible.
